Strong expertise. Not enough of the right work.

You know how to deliver for clients. But winning the next engagement still depends too heavily on your relationships, your referrals, and whatever time you can find for business development.

We help sustainability consultancies sharpen what they sell, find the companies that need it, and build a more consistent way to win work—without adding a sales team.

Upside began as one of the first sustainability consulting firms. We have watched good firms struggle.

Upside started in 2006, under another name, as one of the first sustainability consulting firms. We have been in business ever since, evolving with the market as it ebbed, flowed and matured. Along the way, we have also watched consultancies close.

As recently as 2025, one firm shut down a sustainability practice 18 months after investing $1.2 million in it. They had invested in subject-matter expertise to deliver the work, but not in people who understood the nuances of communicating, marketing, and selling it.

That experience shapes how we work. Knowing your subject and knowing how to build a business around it are different capabilities. You shouldn’t have to figure out both on your own.

You don’t need to explain everything you do. You need buyers to recognize why they need you.

Your expertise may span strategy, reporting, decarbonization, and implementation. But a list of capabilities leaves prospective clients to figure out where you fit.

We help you turn that expertise into offers built around specific buyers, business problems, and outcomes—so the right clients can see why they should talk to you.

That also means making clear where your judgment, experience, and ability to move work forward add value beyond what clients can produce internally or with AI.

Get beyond “we should be talking to more companies.”

You don’t need another broad prospect list or outreach campaign that sounds like everyone else’s.

You need to know which companies fit your expertise, what’s happening inside their businesses, and what gives them a reason to act.

We help you identify those opportunities and approach buyers with a relevant point of view—whether the trigger is a customer requirement, a leadership change, a regulatory obligation, or a strategy that now needs to become action.

Less time researching companies that were never a fit. More time in conversations where your experience matters.

Help your contact make the case.

A sustainability leader may understand your value immediately. Getting the engagement approved can still mean answering very different questions from finance, leadership, legal, and procurement.

We help you connect your work to the priorities of the people involved in the decision, giving your contact a clearer case to carry internally.

Not less technical substance. A stronger explanation of why the work matters to the business.

Build business development into the way your firm works.

When client delivery gets busy, business development is often what slips. When projects end, rebuilding the pipeline becomes urgent.

We help you build a repeatable process for finding opportunities, preparing outreach, and following through. AI supports the research and routine work; your expertise stays at the center of the conversation.

Your partners and consultants don’t need to become full-time salespeople. They need the insight, preparation, and support to make their business-development time count.

FAQ
Most of our work comes from referrals. What would you change?

We wouldn’t ask you to abandon what works. We help make business development less dependent on waiting for the next introduction: identifying companies that fit your expertise, recognizing reasons to start a conversation and following up consistently. Referrals remain part of the approach, rather than carrying the whole pipeline.

Do we need to hire a sales team?

Not necessarily. We can build around the people already responsible for client relationships and business development. The aim is to give partners and consultants a clearer focus, better preparation and practical workflows—not turn everyone into a full-time salesperson. We’ll also be realistic about the time someone needs to commit.

Our expertise is broad. How do we make our offer easier to buy?

We help translate your capabilities into offers built around a recognizable client problem, a clear scope and an outcome you can credibly deliver. That doesn’t mean stripping away the nuance of your work. It means making the starting point easier to understand, discuss and approve.

How do we stand out when clients can do more internally or with AI?

We help you articulate where your involvement changes the outcome—not just what information you provide. Depending on your practice, that may be specialist judgment, stakeholder alignment, implementation support or the ability to move difficult work forward. We use those distinctions to sharpen your offers and sales conversations.

Where would we start—and can you help our team use the work?

A useful starting point is the Buyer Intelligence Brief, which connects your expertise with best-fit accounts, relevant buyer needs and reasons to engage. We can then help turn those findings into offers, outreach and client conversations, with training for the partners or consultants who will use them.
